The first artist of the Collection, that wasn’t exhibited in the last show, we decided to talk about is Joel Andrianomearisoa.
Joel Andrianomearisoa is an artist we’ve discovered during the exhibition Art is hope to the benefits of Aides for its fight against HIV/AIDS. Our first acquisition was done during this exhibition in which Joel Andrianomearisoa is pretty much involved in giving a piece every year.
Joel’s work often recalls, in a very poetic way, human relations such as friendship or love but also feelings like nostalgia and hope.
While following his work, a long time has passed between first and second acquisition of Joel’s workby TPCA. It is during Arco Madrid that we discovered Joel’s monumental piece of art named “The Labyrinth of passions” for which he won the Audemars Piguet – Arco Prize 2016. This piece is one of the most iconic of Joel’s work. It addresses the Passion in which we sometimes get lost in, whether it is the beloved one, a friend or simply a lover. The piece is a reference to sections in Oscar Wilde's letter to his lover De
Profundis while being imprisoned. It represents the impossibility of love to reveal itself “from the depths”. It’s this poetry of “The Labyrinth of Passions” that made us decide the acquisition from the Madrid gallery Sabrina Amrani.
After a solo exhibition, “Last Year in Antananarivo”, at Tyburn Gallery which opened during Frieze week 2016, Joel Andrianomearisoa’s next project will be presented during India Art Fair, in New Delhi in February.
This piece named “When the day belongs to the night” echoes the ones exhibited at Tyburn in which he addresses especially Memoryand recalls for the first time his birth place, Madagascar. Visually we recognize right away Andrianomearisoa’s touch for creating a “painting” with textile, even though he’s starting to use color. “When the day belongs to the night” is a work that recalls with a hint of melancholia, memory, the complexity of relations between India and Madagascar, mixed with a personal story related by the artist.
We’re very happy to be a part of this project with Sabrina Amrani that will be presented during India Art Fair in New Delhi from February 2nd to 5th.
It will be a very intense year for Andrianomearisoa since he will have a showcalled Sentimental products at Les abbatoirs in Toulouse (France), Title TBA, a solo show at La galerie des Galeries in Paris, Essentiel paysage at Al Madeen Art gallery in Marrakech, 100% Afriques (curated by Simon Njami) at La Villette and many other projects.
